The Hindenburg III, docked with The Empire State Building

The Hindenburg III was a commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship featured prominently in the film's opening. The Hindenburg III completed its maiden voyage to New York on 7th October 1939.

Among the passengers of the Hindenburg III was Dr. Jorge Vargas, who mysteriously disappears as the airship docks with the Empire State Building.

Trivia[]

  • In reality, there was only two Hindenburg-class airships; LZ 129 Hindenburg and LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin. Named in honor of Paul von Hindenburg, these were the last such aircraft constructed. The lead ship of the class, the infamous LZ 129 Hindenburg, had established a regular transatlantic service with the Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei GmbH. LZ 129 Hindenburg would be completely destroyed in an accident on May 6th, 1937 at Lakehurst Field, 25 miles (40 kilometers) east-southeast of Trenton, New Jersey. Of the original 36 passengers and 61 crew members aboard, 13 passengers and 22 crewmen perished, as well as one member the ground crew. Herbert Morrison's commentary, frequently referred to by the phrase "Oh the humanity!", has become a classic of audio history.
  • Presumably, the existence of the "Hindenburg III" suggests that no such disaster occurred and the use of airship travel didn't follow the same rapid decline as in reality.
